Happy Halloween

October 31st, 2008 Daniel M. Perez No comments

My wife loves Halloween (I like it allright, but she loves it) and for the little party they’ll have at work, she decided she wanted to make Halloween-themed cupcakes. A few hours of work and a big mess in the kitchen later, behold:

The “T” is because my wife works at Telemundo.

Today she dressed up in her costume to go to work, Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Me? I’m dressed as a serial killer. Yes, it’s lame, now move along.

From both of us, we wish you a

About Names

October 28th, 2008 Daniel M. Perez 1 comment

I say the following not to rebuke, but to inform.

My name is Daniel Perez, though I always use Daniel M. Perez as my official written name. Most people call me Daniel, and some select few call me Danny (with a specific subgroup calling me DP, but that’s mostly in writing only).

My name is NOT Dan. Please don’t call me that. I am much too nice to correct you to your face, but know that I do not like it.

Daniel, not Dan.

Along the same lines, the name of my company is Highmoon Media Productions. That’s Highmoon, all one word.

The name of my company is NOT High Moon. That is a different company (in California, IIRC), not my own.

Highmoon, not High Moon.

Names have power; names are brands. Please respect mine.

HMP Celebrates 4th Anniversary!

October 27th, 2008 Daniel M. Perez 1 comment

On October 12, 2008, Highmoon Media Productions celebrated its 4th anniversary. It has been a fantastic road to this point, full of great experiences, and for that I thank everyone who has ever had anything to do with HMP, whether fellow publishers, customers, freelancers, artists or fellow podcasters; it is the people I have met on this journey that have made all the work worth every second.

Since for personal reasons I was unable to mark the actual anniversary date, I have decided to extend the celebrations a bit longer.

Until Wednesday, November 12, 2008 you will find the entire HMP catalog on sale for 50% off!

Enjoy this opportunity to get some great material for 3.5 Fantasy, our acclaimed magazine Targum, some superhero action for the 4C System, as well as great adventures and sourcebooks from MonkeyGod, all for half price.

We have some big changes brewing regarding various aspects of Highmoon Media Productions (hint: when you visit our RPGnow vendor page, you will see one of the changes to come), so stay tuned for official press releases coming soon.

Once again, thanks for four wonderful years. I hope you’ll join us for many more.

Hoshana Rabbah

October 20th, 2008 Daniel M. Perez 2 comments

Today is Hoshana Rabbah, the day right before the end of Sukkot, where we have a chance to implore G-d one more time for forgiveness, sort of like an addendum to Yom Kippur, just in case. Since Hoshanah Rabbah is during Sukkot, we use our lulav and etrog (the four species) to emphasize our prayers; it’s basically saying, “Hey, G-d, here we have this mitzvah You gave us and we’re doing it, so please keep this in mind as You pass judgement.”

Hoshanah Rabbah
Praying during the Hoshana Rabba service.

Praying with Lulav and Etrog
The special grip you develop to hold prayer book, lulav and etrog at the same time.

My lulav and etrog.

What I love about Sukkot is that it is so not a holiday you can hide: The sukkah goes outside, where everyone can see; the lulav and etrog are large and bright and colorful and makes anyone who sees wonder, what are the Jews doing with those plants?! It is an external holiday, meant to symbolize our effect upon the world, our connection with the world and the nations.

At least up until Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, the eighth and ninth days of the holiday, which are once again internal. Those start tonight, so I am now off to get ready and to party, because, in a week where our main commandment is to be happy, the these two holidays are about the most joyous that you can get.

Our First Sukkah

October 13th, 2008 Daniel M. Perez 3 comments

For about four years I have been celebrating Sukkot with the help of a portable Pop-Up Sukkah that my father-in-law bought for me. It has helped me immensely in my process of growing as a Jew. Convenient as the Pop-Up Sukkah is, its size is very small, and my wife and I barely fit in there with a couple of TV trays as a makeshift table. The simple truth is that it was holding us, and me, from advancing in our observance of this holiday and this mitzvah.

For a couple of years I have been saying that I want to build a real sukkah, “whenever we have the space.” But we’re still here, at our apartment of 5 years, and it simply was time. With my wife’s encouragement, this year I decided to actually build our first sukkah. I looked online for plans to follow, and basically put one together out of a bunch of (way more complicated than they need to be) plans I saw. A trip to Home Depot to check out the available materials gave us the info we needed, and on Sunday, Oct. 12 — my birthday — I went to Home Depot and got all the stuff I needed to build our sukkah.

I started it yesterday afternoon and we got the whole frame up and ready by the time we went to sleep. This morning I woke up to torrential rains in Miami Beach (which is why you buy the pre-treated wood, because it ALWAYS rains for Sukkot) but by noon it had cleared up, so I was able to put the roof on. I stripped the two palm trees next to my apartment of all their fronds (the roof of a sukkah must be made of schach, organic material that grew from the ground but is now disconnected from it, with palm fronds being the traditional, and regional, choice). And that’s it! Our first sukkah is now built and ready.
