Actually Rich there is one: http://itabletop.com/ I have not used it however, but I know they put a strong focus on the webcam aspect of the software.
I have been gaming with Brennen over Skype for the last few months and I can say I will never, ever game online without it again. The voice adds so much to the game (especially with Brennen doing his silly accents). Also there is a built in die roller extra in Skype, search for dice under "Tools" then "Extras".

That would indeed be a fantastic app. The problem is the limited scope; if someone can figure out how to make that for online RPGs yet also have a wider application, then we'd be golden.

Great post, Daniel. I think you nailed the pros and cons.

I crave a single package type of answer - something that brings video for multiple clients and has die rolling, some kind of white boarding and of course, text-chat. That would be a killer app!

<a href="#comment-4215" rel="nofollow">@DNAphil </a>
That is how Brennan used Skype for his game as described on VotR #38. It would be interesting to try this method one time, maybe for me to play with some of my friends in Puerto Rico.

Thanks for the extra info.

My group has been using Skype a bit differently. The majority of our players are local, so we use Skype to bring in 1 additional player. That player we then connect via Skype, using Video Chat.

We have the skype connection on a laptop, with the camera attached on the top, and we sit the laptop at the table, with the camera pointed at the GM, 90% of the time. When players start talking, the owner of the laptop (one of the players), turns the camera to the speaker. During combat, we use the camera to show the player the battlemat.

With only one player coming in via Video Chat, we have had very few issues with Skype. We have had the player in video chat for over 5 hours in a session, with very little sound or video issues.

Using a single player on Video allows that player to really feel like they are at the table, and they are able to see the GM and other players, non-verbal language, which makes a big difference.

I am a big fan of using Skype this way, and would not hesitate to use it in other games.
