My Daemon

November 4th, 2007 3 comments

The website for The Golden Compass movie has this nifty thing where you create a profile and a daemon is chosen for you. Daemons are animal spirits that are linked to you, to your soul. It’s nice to see the use of the word in the context of its Greek origins.

So I created my daemon and I was given Ariel. At the moment, Ariel is the form of a mouse, but that can change. How? Well, if you know me well enough, you can also go and answer a few questions and help me find my true daemon. So, check it out.

Domains of Adventure: The Museum of Infamous Heroism – Now Available

November 1st, 2007 No comments
The Museum of Infamous Heroism Highmoon Media Productions is proud to present Domains of Adventure: The Museum of Infamous Heroism. Nestled on the outskirts of a wealthy city district, this drab unassuming stone structure gives little outside indication of its contents. A bronze plaque above the double door entrance reads: “Museum of Infamous Heroism.” For over 35 years, curator Galdor Vorac has collected and preserved objects belonging to the most nefarious individuals throughout history. The museum is funded by donations from the city and from visitors. Vorac is the sole worker and proprietor and has committed all of the relics’ histories to memory. On days of pleasant weather, the human curator can be seen in the museum’s small yard giving historical lectures or answering questions about his newest acquisition. The Museum of Infamous Heroism is a 9-page ebook detailing a drop-in location for your fantasy game. It includes a general overview of the location, and area-by-area descriptions of the museum, its contents and curator. Rules Appendixes for open rules systems can be found the product page or the HMP website. Written by: Bret Boyd Cartography by: Lonnie Ezell NOW AVAILABLE from RPGnow & DriveThruRPG! Domains of Adventure is a series of systemless products showcasing interesting and unusual locations usable in a variety of games. By focusing on the narrative element instead of the rules mechanics, fans of a variety of rules systems can all enjoy the material and find use for it. To that effect, all Domains of Adventure releases feature additional support in the form of a Rules Appendix, featuring all the rules mechanics relevant to each main release, already translating the narrative elements into ready-to-use stats for a variety of open rules systems. Visit www.highmoonmedia.com/domainsofadventure for more info.

Introducing Pippin

October 22nd, 2007 No comments

Last week my wife sent me a photo SMS of a frazzled kitten and asked, “Do you want another cat?”

Sure, why not.

So we got a new cat and he’s cute as heck. It’s been a few years now since we’ve had a kitten in the house and it’s a lot of fun (and a lot of work, but he does that cute kitten face and wins every time). The kitten is extremely curious and active, which is cool. He’s also learned to use his litterbox quite well, except for a couple of times when he’s peed in his playcube. We originally named him Oliver, but there was something about it that wasn’t right; cute as name as that is, he just wasn’t an Oliver. Last night, after really getting to know him, and seeing all his quirks (like the fact he likes beer, a lot!), his real name came to us: Pippin, or Pip for short (which can stand for a shorter form of Pippin, or for Pipsqueek, cause he squeaks a lot). So, here’s our new feline baby.

My Birthday Party

October 14th, 2007 1 comment

It rocked, plain and simple. My wife did an awesome job of putting together this little 80′s-themed shindig and though I bitched and moaned every time she asked me to move this, or arrange that, or whatever, I profusely thank her for what I think was the best birthday party ever (barring my Venice-themed 30th b-day).

There were about 15 people here, including the in-laws, who left early as expected, and a bunch of friends. Now that I think about it, though, except for two (my buddy and his in-the-process-of-becoming-ex-wife — yeah, that was fun there for a moment) they were all friends of my wife. I guess I need to get more friends. But it was neat, and among the invited was a dude (Carlos Hernan, who is an awesome pianist) who had a class with my wife back in college and who now lives in, get this, Paris. Yes, Paris, as in France. Needless to say I was a tad jealous and I put him through 20 Questions about the move and living in the most awesome city in the world.

Anyway, the party was great, and we danced and lipsynched and played Trivia Pursuit: Totally 80′s and watched classic 80′s flicks like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. We also ate, had amazing guava & cheese cupcakes (courtesy of Caramelo Cupcakes), and had lots of yummy Belgian and Dutch beers. I made out pretty good in the gift dept, and aside from the Borders card, which will be promptly spent today, all the others will be put towards the one material thing I want most now: a Wii.  :-)

Here are some pics of the party, and you can see more on Flickr: My 80′s Birthday Party!
